Better than Expected
Bridge to Terabithia is an amazing book and Disney and Walden Media have done a fantastic job of bringing this wonderful story to the screen. They have stayed very true to the book and have found the perfect actors for the job. Among them are Josh Hutcherson and Anna-Sophia Robb who do a brilliant job of portraying Jess Aarons and Leslie Burke.
The movie is a wonderful story of how powerful the imagination can be. Jess Aarons (Hutcherson) is annoyed with his life and his family, but when he meets Leslie Burke (Robb) she shows him that life is what you make of it, to release the creative you. For a long time, Jess’ drawings have been his only source of comfort, but with Leslie’s help, not only does he create a friendship stronger than most, but together they create a whole new world. A world without bullies, without annoying siblings and parents. A world just for them. Terabithia. As Miss Edmunds says to Jess, “With a mind like yours wide open, you could create a whole new world.”
However, when Jess is struck with an almighty loss, things go downhill and Jess has to learn to take control and keep Terabithia alive.
It is a heart-warming story, yet I can guarantee that almost all of you will be crying or close to it at the end of the movie.
The special effects are somewhat clunky in parts, but it works well because Terabithia is their imagination, and so it wouldn’t be perfectly computer generated.
The cinematography is absolutely amazing and captures every moment in the story with complete believability.
Once again, I am amazed with the performances of the actors and Zooey Deschanel (Miss Edmunds) definitely joins my gradually growing list of favourite actors. The emotion and realness that each of the actors portrayed astounded me.
There is something for everyone in this movie, which has certainly helped it in its success. Being a lover of the book, I am 100% impressed with this movie and would recommend it to anyone.

Don't let the Disney label and fantasy trailer fool you
It is not often that a Disney film is released offering as much for adults as it does for children.
Bridge to Terabithia takes us on an extraordinary journey with a young 5th grader Jesse (Josh Hutcherson from Zathura), who being the only boy in a family of 5 children, is finding life a little difficult to traverse. His rural family are poor and although his parents are well meaning, they put a large amount of responsibility on Jesse and seem quite unaware of the difficulties he is facing at home and especially, at school where apart from being teased and bullied, he is besotted with a young music teacher Ms Edmunds (Zooey Deschanel).
A turn for the better comes along when a new literary family move in to the neighbouring property and Leslie (a vibrant Annasophia Robb) the only child, befriends Jesse.
Leslie has a wild and colourful imagination and the two friends regularly journey into the woods surrounding their properties and create a wonderful and sometimes frightening fantasy world that only they know about.
Meanwhile despite their happy friendship and Jesse's growing confidence, both of them are teased at school by the head bullies which prompts them to plot a scheme which will turn the tables on the head bully and give her a taste of her own medicine.
The results were as expected, but the two did not feel much pride in their success as they realised that bully behaviour was probably a result of problems at home.
From this point on the story takes a very sad and unexpected turn which I shall not reveal, but it ultimately helps Jesse to continue to grow both in confidence and imagination and above all, to be comfotable within himself.
This film is more about relationships and people's perceptions of others and is beautifully and naturally acted by all - especially Josh Hutcherson who is a standout as Jesse.
There are moments when you will definitely need the tissues and others where you will giggle, but for the most, you will just be fascinated by the gentle style in which this movie plays out and after the finish, realize you have been part of something special.
The music is excellent icluding Everlife's Look Through My Eyes and Keep Your Mind Wide Open by Annasophia Robb.
The orchestral music by Aaron Zigman and played by the Hollywood Studio Symphony is ethereal and creates much of the fantasy mood.
The transfer to DVD is not super clear, but acceptable. 3.5/5
Sound is excellent 4.5/5
