Cog-tacular
After thoughtful consideration, I finally purchased an Xbox recently (late 2007) and Gears of war is one of the first games I had played through. I was not disappointed with my purchase as the game was enjoyable and interesting. Though it might have been a bit short in length, and to some it might be a bit gory. However if you're into third person shooters, this is definitely a game for you.
The game is set in the future, where a bunch of aliens have infested the planet. And you, Marcus Fenix, are released from prison in order to attack the core of the alien infestation, with a team of fellow super soldiers.
The entire game is seen in third person view, with Fenix set off centre. My only concern is that it takes a short while to get used to, but you eventually work out that the aim is in the middle. The advantages of this is fantastic though, as you see more of the action, and when Fenix runs, the camera shake adds to the "heat of the battle" feel.
Controlling Fenix is also simple, finer aim is made by pressing the left trigger, and shooting is the right trigger. Changing weapons is done through the D-Pad, and the analog sticks are for movement.
Graphics are very nice, and make use of the Xbox 360's ability. Although in some cut scenes the frame rate drops enough to be noticeable, however it doesn't impact the game. The normal game play is smooth, and aliens are quite scary. This is where the gore is also noticeable, as when you shoot the aliens, they obviously blow up and some blood seeps out of them. Just don't eat your lunch beforehand if you have a weak stomach.
The weapon types aren't very many, so if you like games with lots of different weapons you may be disappointed. I wasn't too fussed, as I mainly stuck with the sniper rifle (which worked like a rail gun) and the standard rifle.
Replayability factor is very good, because there are several levels of difficulty, as well as multiplayer option, with co-operative mode. This allows you to play as Dom, another member of the unit, which unlocks Xbox 360 gamer points. Xbox live also adds to the value, as you can play versus or co-op over the internet.
I've only finished the game on "casual" mode, and I plan on playing the other modes, which are "hardcode" and I think the one after is "insane" or something like that. I've also played on Xbox live, and it’s a different experience with the third person perspective.
I highly recommend Gears of war if you like third person shooters, and don't mind the bloodiness of shooting aliens who want to kill you as well. The graphics are quite good, and the game play is fun and engaging, and when you're done with that, try your luck against others on Xbox live. If you don't have the internet – you can try to find another buddy to team up with and blast those crazy creatures back to where they came from.
