Stunning RPG - A true return to the JRPG style
Lost Odyssey finally gives the JRPG (Japanese Role Playing Game - eg. Final Fantasy) fans something to sink their teeth into. In true JRPG style, Lost Odyssey uses the turn based gameplay (it wouldn't be a JRPG without it) and expands upon the original mould by allowing up to 5 characters in the party at once along with a formation system - to help organise the party and keep the casters out of harms way while also adding a deep tactical element. As you would expect, more characters join your party along the way - each with their own differing abilities and experiences.
As per normal JRPGs, black and white magic make their appearances while also introducing new categories, Spirit magic and Composite Magic.
Lost Odyssey provides a unique character learning system. The game has two types of characters, Mortals and Immortals. While the Mortals level up and learn pre-set skills as per any other JRPG, the Immortals provide a unique learning system. Instead of learning skills that the developers have decided suit the character (ie. character X will learn black magic 2 at level y, character X will not be able to learn physical attacks), the skills the immortals actually learn is up to the player. The immortals do not learn skills automatically, they instead learn skills from their fellow party members. The player can decide what skill the immortal should learn next (chosen from a list of skills that the mortal party members know) and after enough battles, the immortal will learn the skill. This new system allows for players to create their own custom character wielding whatever powers they wish. That said, just because one of your immortals can learn magic doesn't mean they'll be very good at it - if their speciality is physical combat, their magic skills may not be ideal.
Ultimately this allows for the player to customise the immortal characters and pick what abilities they believe the immortals should have - allowing for your own unique character skillset.
The Ring system and accessories in Lost Odyssey two other key features. Throughout the game you will discover 'rings'. These rings give your characters certain abilities or bonuses such as extra damage against certain creature types or infusing your weapon with fire. Some rings also allow for multiple bonuses. That said, each character can only wear one ring at a time - so try to match up each character with a ring that suits them best and also suits the type of enemies you are facing.
The accessory system allows for the learning of extra skills. Accessories, like rings, can be found throughout the storyline and they provide instant benefits to the wearer. Just like the skill learning system for immortals, immortals can also learn the benefits provided by the accessories - later allowing immortals to retain those benefits even while a different accessory is equipped.
Lost Odyssey boasts between 40 and 70 hours of gameplay (depending on the player) all spread amongst four game discs (yes, FOUR). With so many areas to explore, items to find and skills to learn it provides a really fantastic experience with lots of cut scenes and a good mix of character personalities/humor. Lost Odyssey is a fantastic game for those who like the JRPG (turn based) gameplay and really brings back the wonderful memories and feeling of the Final Fantasy series.
With such a large amount of content (40-70 hours) it's definitely worth the purchase. 5 stars!
