GuitarHero Aerosmith - An Unwelcome Addition

The name says it all; in this the fifth iteration of the Guitar Hero series it is all about Aerosmith. However while all the central game play elements are still there, your virtual band is placed in the shoes of Aerosmith. All the way from their first gig up until they are inducted into the music hall of fame. Also added into the mix is a bit of face time with each of the members from the band describing what it was like for the band at each of the stages in their careers which are unlocked and played after a new venue is obtained.

But from here on out it only gets worse. Aerosmith suffers from the only thing that could ever kill a music game (A poor music line up). In fact it suffers from THE worst music line up in a guitar hero game to date. For me Guitar Hero has done what I never thought possible, it made me feel like playing each song was a chore, nay it was more than that, it made me feel like it was a horrendously appalling waste of time. With each song I played I was left hoping for something that not only entertained me but was actually aesthetically pleasing. But alas song after song I received boring and repetitive note charts complemented by what I can only describe as poorly recorded sounds, most of the time leaving me unsure whether or not Aerosmith songs are played this way or if Activision somehow stuffed up and as a result I am unable to understand or decipher the lyrics to almost the entire set list of songs.

Adding insult to injury in playing the game I sometimes felt as though notes were missing (After playing on expert for a fair while it becomes much easier to spot such things). Playing single notes were I could distinctly hear 1 or 2 extra and quicker notes that weren’t added to the end before the oncoming chords or at other times notes would be displayed as singles but were clearly held notes. However these incidents were nigh as frequent as the guitar note charts being up to .5 of a second off what was being displayed on screen. This often resulted in the removal of any immersion that might be felt while playing as a “Rock Star”. This also resulted in being more than slightly off putting were it to occur during a fast sequence of notes, naturally messing with your rhythm.

Another step taken whether it be intentional or not is the obvious decrease in difficulty on the expert level. This move is either a love hate thing with it more than likely alienating the hardcore Guitar Hero fans looking for their next Through the Fire and Flames challenge or just some harder songs. I myself fall mostly in this category with only a single song receiving a 4* rank (The boss battle Song) and only twice was I ever put into a yellow rock meter position during a long set of unexpected trills. This however for the vast majority of Guitar Hero players is a warm welcome with many a player falling victim to the excruciating solo of mosh 1 in raining blood in Guitar Hero 3.

Overall for the casual Guitar Hero player this Guitar Hero Aerosmith might be of interest or worthwhile purchase, especially if you’re a fan of Aerosmith. However for the more hardcore there are many things that might be off putting but slight sound glitches and note chart issues aside it all comes down to whether or not you will enjoy playing the songs or hate them, and that is up to each individual to decide for themselves.

However for me, this latest addition to the series is lacking in all most every aspect and leaves a sour taste behind.
